Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Better Every Time

Do you have one of those movies that simply grabs you more and more with each and every viewing? I don't just mean a movie you enjoy watching; everyone has plenty of those. I mean a movie that draws you into its world, kicking and screaming.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of those movies for me. Come to think of it, it may be the only movie like that for me. It is one DVD that will never leave my collection, and I must have watched it about 16 times by now. Every time, it strikes me in a different way. Most of the time, I find myself saturated in the visual beauty of the way the film was shot, or the ingenious old-school effects. Most recently, I have been intrigued by small little audio trinkets here and there.

One of the guys on my hall had never seen it, so we sat down for my 17th viewing. Every time I watched the movie before, I found myself asking the same question at the end: does Joel really remember Clementine, or does the force of love simply draw the two together again?

This time, my question was answered within the first 5 minutes of the film. In the opening Montauk sequence, where Joel and Clem meet (for the second time), there is a strange echo at the end of the sequence where Joel is standing by the beach house. It caught my ear and, after watching the film, I jumped back to the beginning to listen again. Sure enough, it is an indistinct echo of Clementine's voice.

He remembers her. Somewhere deep inside us, claims this film, is the undying memory of love. I am glad that it is not fate or chance or an impersonal force of love that reunites these two quirky souls, but the pervasive memory of each other.

I just thought that was pretty neat.

If We Do It, It's Marketing. If You Do It, It's Propaganda.

I THINK WISE PARENTS SHOULD TAKE THEIR CHILDREN TO SEE THE GOLDEN COMPASS!

I've been biting my tongue for quite long enough, thank you. This movie has caused quite an uproar among many in the Christian community, and if good churchgoers haven't figured it out yet, allow me to take the time to whisper kindly into their ear:

When you threaten to boycott, protest, or generally stamp your foot about something, your quest to "raise awareness" also generates free publicity for the evil you're attempting to protect people from.

For those of you who haven't heard the hullaballoo, here's the run-down:
There is a children's fantasy movie coming out around the holidays based on a series of books by an outspoken atheist. In the final book of the series, God is killed. Though the movie is only based on the first book, there is understandable concern in some circles about implicit atheism being presented to children. However, something doesn't sit right here.

The Chronicles of Narnia, a children's fantasy movie based on a series of books by an outspoken Christian, came out a short while ago. The movie was based on the first book, and there was understandable praise in some circles about implicit Christianity being presented to children.

If it is acceptable for a movie like the Chronicles of Narnia to be made by a big-name studio, how can good Christians like us pull a switcheroo and protest the release of a movie like the Golden Compass? It hardly seems ethical, especially given the fact that EVERY film presents some sort of world-view to its audience...especially children's movies.

What if, instead of attempting to protect our children though avoidance, we protect them by guidance? What if we go see the movie with them, actually talk to them afterwards, and so on. If they want to read the books, why not read the books with them? It could lead to conversations that otherwise might never happen between parents and children. Simple exposure to atheism will not immediately convert viewers to the "dark side." Instead, it may actually present a platform that can question, challenge, and strengthen our beliefs. I am convinced that the oft-cited problem of young adults leaving the church IS a problem PRECISELY BECAUSE parents have chosen to shelter their young for decades, rather than training them in righteousness and equipping them to answer the questions the world will ask.

But that's just me, and I could be wrong.

The Point of Summer

Summer meant so much when I was a child. It meant various educational (read: nerdy) and outdoorsy (read: embarassing) camp experiences. It meant getting candy from the snack bar at the swim club, or the occassional summers my family decided an above-ground pool was worth the effort. It meant vacations-glorious times when mom and dad planned and paid for everything under the sun for about a week of sheer unadulterated bliss. And it meant sunburn; yeah, it meant lots of sunburn.

For many college students, summer still means that. For others, it means lounging, relaxing, and catching up with old friends. For some, it means a mountain of books to read not because of assignments, but for personal entertainment and improvement. Then there are the movie-plot summers filled with wacky parties, spontaneous road trips, and life changing experiences.

My summer, for the record, has been none of the above. My summer has been suits and ties and an empty shopping mall. In place of old friends, I have been catching up with nasty e-mails from my district manager. Instead of a mountain of books, I have a long list of tasks and the hope of selling jewelry. I have home or, more accurately, my bedroom: a messy, gray cube. I have the internet and late night television. Luckily, I also have Christine. If it wasn't for wedding planning, going to the movies, and just generally hanging out with the love of my life, this summer would have been quite a waste.

I move back to school in two weeks for RA training, and I am actually excited for this summer to be over. My old friends and I do not "catch up," mostly because we have all gone our separate ways. Or maybe not--maybe they are waiting for me to call. If that's the case, I'm sorry but I have to work. There have been no wacky parties, but that was never really my scene to begin with. The possibility of spontaneous road trips is cut short by both my work schedule and the cost of gasoline. However, I don't have a problem with any of that. Such is life, right?

My problem is that I have no sunburn. No nights in front of the air conditioner covering my shoulders in aloe vera gel, no crisp red nose or ears. My skin remains pale from the darkness of my bedroom and the flourescent lighting of my store. As strange as it seems, I miss getting sunburn. When I was younger, sunburn was a painful reminder--a tattoo of the places I had been, an indicator of a story to share, a simple symbol that I had actually gone somewhere and done something. I have no such tattoos this year.

Have I wasted my summer?
